Scott Tillett

Biography

Scott Tillett co-founded Pine Tillett LLP in 2016 where he handles civil appeals, specializing in plaintiff-side appeals. Mr. Tillett is recognized as a Certified Appellate Law Specialist by the State Bar of California. He has been consistently recognized for excellence in appellate advocacy. Mr. Tillett was a recipient of the Daily Journal’s 2021 California Lawyer Attorneys of the Year (CLAY) Award. That same year, he received the Consumer Attorneys of California’s “Street Fighter of the Year” Award.

Mr. Tillett has been recognized as a California Super Lawyer in Appellate Law consecutively from 2023 through 2025 (he had previously been selected as Super Lawyers Southern California Rising Star consecutively since 2016). He has also been selected as one of the Daily Journal’s “Top Labor & Employment Lawyers” consecutively from 2021 through 2024 and he has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America in Appellate Practice in 2024 and 2025. Additionally, in 2019, he was one of five finalists for CAALA’s “Appellate Attorney of the Year Award.” 
 
Mr. Tillett has handled numerous high-profile appeals. Some of his recent appellate victories include the landmark California Supreme Court decision, B.B. v. County of Los Angeles (2020) 10 Cal.5th 1. In 2002, he successfully defended a $58 million judgment in Khan v. David (No. B305849) 2022 WL 1702702, in which the appellate court affirmed the entirety of the $50 million punitive damages award. He also handled Mazik v. GEICO (2019) 35 Cal.App.5th 455, a case that has been cited by over 70 secondary sources, in which he convinced the court that an insurance giant’s managing agent had ratified conduct warranting punitive damages.
  
Mr. Tillett is on the Board of Governors of the California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA) where he serves as Chair of Education Committee and he is an active member of CELA’s Amicus Committee. He also serves on the CAALA Board of Governors ,where he is Vice-Chair of the Listserv Committee and he is an active member of CAALA’s Wellness Committee. Mr. Tillett is also a member of the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), the American Association for Justice (AAJ), and the Appellate Courts Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA).

Mr. Tillett previously served as an Associate Editor of Advocate Magazine, supervising the annual “Employment Law” issue. He has authored articles for legal publications, on Maximizing Attorney’s Fees in FEHA cases (Advocate, April 2022), Appellate Traps (Forum, March/April 2022), the Private Attorney’s General Act (Advocate, May 2019), whistleblower protections (Advocate, May 2018), the disentitlement doctrine (December 2017), and arbitration enforcement (Advocate, June 2015). He is also a frequent speaker on appellate issues.
 
Mr. Tillett received his Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in all courts in California and the United States Supreme Court.
